Stihl 051 AVL 6. - Finishing touches

So the saw is basically done, however there were thwo things that bothered me.

Carburetor

I bought this saw with a newish looking aftermarket carburetor, it had no markings on it. Originally this machines had a Tillotson HS-60D, this one looked like one, but not quite right. Even though it worked, and could be roughly adjusted, there was a slight problem with it. The positioning and/or the shape of the lever of the throttle shaft is a bit off. What I mean by that is that the idle screw could not catch it, or only in an awkward position where the throttle could get stuck. Only position where it did hit the screw properly was at a very high idle speed. I couldn’t really get the idle adjustment perfect, where I wanted to be.

So I decided to bite the bullet, and buy an actual Tillotson, or at least one that actually matches the original one. I ordered it from Sägenspezi, I also ordered a few other stuff from them, including the bar (75 cm/29 inch) and chain. They offer a bunch of stuff for these veterans Stihls, and as far as I can tell, in a decent quality.

The two carbs side by side. The right one is the (supposedly) actual Tillotson, and as you can see the other one is similar, but there are differences, including that small lever. With this, the idle could be set properly.

Kill switch

This switch had to be replaced, but when I ordered a new one I didn’t pay attention that there are different variations. What I got at first although worked, was too small, and it was hard to operate. So I replaced with one that is longer and actually matches the original (on the right).

Sound

And finally, I consider this project done. Of course, this couldn’t be complete without listening to probably one of the best sounding two stroke engine I’ve heard so far.
